Why We Need to Fall in Love with Offices Again

Appetites and attitudes for offices have drastically shifted.

Pre-pandemic, commuting to work five days a week was the norm, regardless of office conditions.

What used to be grey cubes lacking natural sunlight, greenery and life, are now warm spaces with an inviting feeling.

But have we ever stopped to consider why offices have developed such a negative stigma?

Technological advancements

They’ve reshaped the way we work – particularly with the rise of remote work. Being given the resource to work from anywhere has challenged traditional notions of a fixed physical space – the office.

Societal shifts

A big player of the negative stigma of offices.

The flexibility that has rewarded many with a valued work-life balance has made constraints of a traditional office environment less appealing to many.

Don’t forget about the shift in demographics too – the rise of younger generations prioritising flexibility has fuelled the stigma.

But it’s not all bad news. Offices have their perks, and they’re sticking around for a while.

Next steps: reframing the office narrative

Office spaces are becoming a space for investment – investment in employees’ productivity and wellbeing.

Providing enhanced amenities and facilities such as; comfortable chairs, well-equipped break rooms, modern technology, break-out areas and focus zones heavily demonstrates employers commitment to employee well-being and satisfaction.

Small touches can also make a big difference – plants, warm tones and natural materials such as wood and stone.

The key is to listen to your employees – what do they value in a workplace? What would make them feel more comfortable and motivated to come into an office? Setting a positive tone and creating a welcoming atmosphere can foster a sense of belonging and community.

Zac’s food for thought

“The negative portrayal of offices seems to be linked with individual rights, and the role of the office as an oppressive place.

In reality, the office is a place where you come to grow, learn, create, and increase your value. It’s a place that enables productive human connection, where you build confidence and hone your leadership and communication skills.

Moreover, the office brings people from diverse backgrounds and skill sets together amidst the hustle and bustle of our amazing and vibrant cities. A future where this didn’t happen would be very sad, and an anchor on productivity for our economy.

There’s no doubt offices need to ‘earn the commute’, but it’s time to flip the narrative and appreciate what the office has to offer to our lives and careers.”

In a nutshell…

At TSP, we strongly believe the office is back – but it needs to be seen from a modern lens. One that supports wellbeing, culture, innovation and multi-model working.

The goal is to provide your employees with the space to thrive, whilst feeling comfortable. How to do this? Make their environment a priority.

We’ve been in the office game for a while – we know what makes people want to come in. Need a hand with that? Let’s chat.
